my zone extenders sometimes have a super loud clicking noise when the fans are running on the side. Before I take them out of my rack and do a whole bunch of troubleshooting/maintenance is there a replacement fan I could purchase for them that would work/you’d recommend? I only want it to go down for a brief period instead of having to wait so I want to be prepared!!!
hoping it’s just a simple blow out the duct issue, but you never know!
Here is the fan we normally use, though an easy check for whether or not you actually need a replacement can be done without even opening the unit
If you see a lot of dust, that’s an obvious one, but if you can’t see the plastic support structure and wires of the fans on the left side of the unit, there’s a good chance that the noisy fan just needs some room to breathe. Sometimes when fans get mounted in a way that we now consider “backwards” the screws holding the fans to the case can sometimes hold the housing too tight and cause the blades to hit the plastic body, particularly as the natural wear of the fan would make the spinning blades naturally rest further from the body of the unit. To solve this you can either loosen the screws a bit or reverse the fan mounting.
The way you’d check for this on the inside of the box, if you can’t tell externally, is if you can see the manufacturer’s logo on a sticker from the inside of the box.
Totally makes sense- thanks for the detailed response! I took the fan out and blew out the dust and then also put some lubricant just to see if that might help. So far no clicks but if they come back I’ll check out a fan replacement! Appreciate it!
