Pre-Out Only Expander

This might be a crazy idea, or potentially have only very limited use, but my use case for the AmpliPi has a need for a few zones to be 100% line level out with no amplification. i.e. feeding a couple of rooms that have Yamaha Receivers hooked up to 7 channel speakers and TVs, also a powered subwoofer amplifier for my outdoor audio.

This post on the Home-Assistant forums got me thinking:

Would it be feasible to create an expander unit that had no amplifier (just on/off logic for the outputs) in it at a reduced cost? Obviously it could be that the amp board is trivial in cost and the chassis/wiring/etc is the bulk and my idea is crazy, but I wanted to throw it out there.

This is something that we will consider in the future, especially if there is demand. At this moment when we are just starting out, we are worried about having too many different types of units to test against ( we want to make sure we wouldn’t break this use case in a firmware upgrade ). I really hope that we can consider this for you in the future, but for now it doesn’t make sense for us, sorry about that.

Yeah, no worries at all, it was just something that popped into my head and I wanted to put it out there. If I were you I wouldn’t build the product unless there was demand for it either. If others are interested in it they can comment on this post and you can use that information for the future to gauge demand for it.
