Is there a fan in the Amplipi?

Is there a fan in the unit? It sounded like a fan came on that was fairly noisy and it really did not seem that hot in the room. I shut it down and when I restarted, the noise was gone.,

Hey Tom-

There are 3 fans in an AmpliPi: 2 on the intake on the left and 1 on integrated into the power supply. In the early AmpliPis the power supply fan was controlled directly by the power supply itself.

What you are describing sounds like the integrated fan in the Meanwell power supply. It is controlled by an internal thermistor and is “on-off”. As you mentioned, when it comes on, it can be fairly noisy. We have since made hardware modifications to AmpliPi so that we can control this fan directly and vary the speed. You can also make the mods on your unit. I would suggest adding this before the fan in the Meanwell power supply:

As an alternative option, you could replace the fan in the Meanwell with an ultra quiet 50mm fan such as this:

Jason, Is it difficult to install both? I would like to try both options. Thanks, Tom

Oops looks like we dropped the ball on this Tom  Sorry about that.

I don’t see any reason that you couldn’t do both. Just make sure you give the power supply enough airflow that the fan isn’t running all of the time when all of the zones are on.

The fan is on backorder at the moment. i’ll get back when I have the parts.
