Hey guys- curious about the new name change on the units expected out soon. Are here more things that have changed with the units? Can they work with the old units or no? Is there some function we won’t be able to have in the future by having the AmpliPi VS the Pro? Thanks!
HI @matchmee,
Thanks for the question and sorry for the delayed response. So a lot of what we are doing in the redesign is focused on the chassis. The big differences between the new PRO units and the current Pi units are as follows:
- Moving from the LCD display to a new E-INK display.
- Moving to a new chassis design. This design has better protection for back connections during transport / installation, has a more optimized design for production (fewer separate pieces), and has better EMC characteristics. It should also provide us with more sourcing options for the chassis - which should really help us ramp up production.
- Dynamic range has been upped from 1 Vrms to 2 Vrms for our pre-amplified audio sections. This allows for up to 2 Vrms inputs on RCA inputs and should also improve performance of the analog preamp sections.
So those are the big changes that are coming to the hardware. New software releases will continue to support all versions of hardware.
Regarding the move from -Pi to -Pro:
Going forward, the plan is to refer to our software system as AmpliPi. The hardware we sell will be called AmpliPro. This allows us to also sell our professional grade hardware systems to commercial installers and distributors. They can then leverage the API we provide to build custom audio solutions. The goal here is to increase our market and continue to fund software development.
